A refrigerator usually stays the same after you buy it. Samsung is taking a different approach. The company is rolling out Tizen OS 10.0 updates that add AI features to selected refrigerators and laundry appliances already in homes. The rollout starts in September 2026, with support varying by model, model year, and market.

Published on September 21, 2026, Samsung’s latest announcement builds on its U.S. rollout of upgraded Family Hub software in May. Select U.S. refrigerators gained AI Vision built with Google Gemini. The update also improved Bixby voice control. It added personalized Now Brief features as well. Samsung is now expanding that experience to additional markets.

“Home appliances are products that consumers rely on for many years. We believe supporting them over time requires not only reliable hardware, but also software that continues to evolve,” said Jeong Seung Moon, Executive Vice President and Head of the R&D Team of the Digital Appliances (DA) Business at Samsung Electronics.

The update covers selected 21.5-inch and 32-inch Family Hub refrigerators released between 2021 and 2025. Some 9-inch Family Hub models from 2025 are also included.

Updated AI Vision can recognize a wider range of fresh and packaged foods. This includes branded and region-specific items. Samsung is also adding Now Brief and What’s for Today? to help users manage food and make meal choices.

For example, a household can use the refrigerator’s AI tools to identify food stored inside. The screen can also provide information for daily meal decisions.

What changes for refrigerator owners?

  • More food recognition: AI Vision can identify a wider range of items.
  • More useful screen features: Now Brief and What’s for Today? bring personalized information to the Family Hub screen.
  • New software on selected older models: Compatible appliances can gain new functions through an update.

That gives Samsung refrigerators AI features a role beyond the original hardware launch. Samsung is also updating selected Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, Washer and Dryer models released in 2024 and 2025.

Bixby will offer more natural voice interaction. Users can ask, “When will my laundry be finished?” and get the remaining cycle time. Supported models with 7-inch Smart Screens will also receive Easy Mode. It reduces clutter and makes key information easier to find. For Samsung AI appliances, this is a practical use of AI. The focus is on making routine tasks easier.

Samsung’s approach fits its wider software plan. In August 2025, Samsung announced longer software support for eligible smart appliances. These Wi-Fi-enabled models can receive updates for up to seven years after launch. The policy covers models launched from 2024.

The latest update shows how that policy can bring new features after release. For U.S. owners, the May Family Hub update was an early example. The September announcement now extends this approach to more markets worldwide. However, rollout timing and supported features will vary by market.

For buyers, this adds another factor to consider. A connected appliance is no longer judged only by its launch features. Software support also matters.

Samsung’s update shows how appliances are becoming more software-driven. Hardware still matters. But AI, voice controls, and regular software updates are also shaping the ownership experience.

Author’s Note: In my view, Samsung’s latest update shows that software support is becoming a key part of the smart-appliance experience. As highlighted in this New York Press Release, Samsung is bringing useful AI features to existing devices. This gives consumers more value from products they already own.
