OpenAI is pushing AI coding beyond the desktop with the launch of codex on mobile inside the ChatGPT app for iPhone and Android. The update allows users to manage AI coding workflows directly from smartphones, reflecting a broader shift toward always-available software development tools.

Instead of waiting to return to a laptop, users can now stay connected to active AI-generated coding tasks throughout the day. Developers can review outputs, approve commands, switch models, and monitor remote coding environments directly from mobile devices.

Some of the key mobile capabilities include:

  • Reviewing AI-generated code changes from a phone
  • Approving commands while away from a workstation
  • Following test results remotely in real time
  • Switching AI models without interrupting workflows
  • Turning quick ideas into active coding tasks instantly

The update matters because AI coding assistants are increasingly becoming persistent collaborators rather than one-time chat tools. A developer commuting home can now approve bug fixes, follow test results remotely, or continue active coding sessions without reopening a laptop.

OpenAI says Codex syncs in real time with laptops, development machines, and cloud-based environments. That allows users to continue workflows from nearly anywhere while staying connected to long-running AI tasks.

Unlike traditional coding assistants tied mainly to desktop setups, Codex on mobile supports a more flexible style of development where users can supervise AI-assisted workflows remotely.

Practical use cases already emerging include:

  • Reviewing bug fixes during commutes
  • Monitoring active builds from a smartphone
  • Checking AI-generated suggestions between meetings
  • Managing remote coding environments while traveling
  • Collaborating with distributed development teams faster

Alongside the mobile rollout, OpenAI introduced additional enterprise-focused capabilities, including Hooks, programmatic access tokens, and HIPAA-compliant support for eligible enterprise environments.

The company also highlighted secure relay infrastructure and Remote SSH support designed to help developers connect with remote coding environments more safely.

Enterprise-focused additions include:

  • Secure relay systems for remote connections
  • Remote SSH support for development environments
  • Programmatic access tokens for automation workflows
  • HIPAA-compliant support for eligible organizations
  • Expanded collaboration tools for larger teams

The rollout also improves support for Codex on iPad and iOS devices alongside broader Android compatibility. OpenAI says Windows support is expected soon.

The update places OpenAI more directly into the growing market for cross-device AI developer tools, where coding assistants are increasingly expected to work continuously across desktop, cloud, and mobile environments. More than four million people now reportedly use Codex weekly.

OpenAI says the rollout is expanding across:

  • Free plans
  • Go plans
  • Business plans
  • Enterprise plans

The launch reflects a growing expectation that AI developer tools should remain accessible across devices instead of being tied to a single workstation.

OpenAI’s expansion of Codex on mobile signals a broader shift in how developers interact with AI-assisted workflows beyond traditional desktop setups. As coding tools become more connected across devices, mobile access could play a bigger role in keeping software teams productive, responsive, and continuously connected to ongoing development tasks.
