Your old Xbox game discs may be more useful now. Xbox Disc to Digital is rolling out to all Xbox console users after a short test with Xbox Insiders. The feature lets owners of supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs claim a digital license for games they already own. Xbox announced the wider rollout on September 29, 2026.
Xbox engineer Eden Marie confirmed the feature is now available to everyone. Some players may need to restart their console before they see the option. A restart also helped make the feature appear during rollout testing. The rollout adds a digital path to supported physical games, while a few limits still matter.
This rollout is about more than simply adding a new Xbox menu option. Here are the key changes in the rollout:
→ Physical games get a digital path: Eligible discs can access supported digital features. Players do not need to buy the game again.
→ A restart may reveal the option: If the feature does not show up, restarting the console is the first step to try.
→ The game must be supported: Owning a disc does not mean every title is part of the program.
→ The catalog is still growing: More publisher support is expanding the list of eligible games.
→ Keep the original disc: The physical copy still matters after you claim its digital license.
Microsoft introduced the feature in August. It gives supported physical games access to digital benefits. Players insert an eligible disc, start the game, and look for the option to claim a digital license. Supported titles can also get features such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming when those services apply.
During testing, a physical copy of Injustice 2 showed a “Claim digital license” option on Xbox Series X. The option appeared in the game menu. For players with large physical libraries, this gives them another way to use games they already own.
If the option is missing, restart the console. After that, insert a supported disc and open the game. The option can also appear in the game’s dashboard menu. This means players should not assume the feature is missing just because it does not appear at first.
The program does not cover every physical game. Xbox says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature. Original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles are not included. Publisher support also matters. Pure Xbox reported that more than 1,500 games had been identified as supported by September 30, 2026. That list can change as more titles are added.
For readers looking for Xbox Disc to Digital games, the safest move is to check each title before assuming it qualifies. The rollout gives physical-game owners another way to access their games digitally. Their physical collection still remains useful.
Author’s Note:
In my view, Xbox Disc to Digital is a meaningful step for players who still prefer physical games. It gives eligible discs more digital value without making physical collections feel outdated. The New York Press Release also highlights why platform changes like this matter for the wider gaming ecosystem.
