Amazon Alexa is moving closer to a broader launch of Alexa+ in India. The latest Amazon Alexa update shows the company testing a Hindi-language version of its generative AI assistant with select users across the country. The move could help expand Amazon Alexa Hindi capabilities while strengthening Amazon’s position in India’s rapidly evolving AI assistant market.

According to emails reviewed by TechCrunch, Amazon has invited some customers to join an Alexa+ beta-testing program in India. Participants were asked to complete a Hindi-language form to express interest in the trial.

The invitation stated that Amazon is creating a new Alexa experience and that user feedback will help refine the service before a wider release. The company also cautioned users that the beta version may contain bugs, provide inaccurate information, or occasionally mispronounce local words and phrases. Amazon has confirmed that testing is underway in India, but has not shared additional details about the rollout.

The development comes as major technology companies race to expand generative AI assistants into new markets through localized experiences. Regional-language support is increasingly becoming a key factor in reaching the next wave of AI users.

Alexa+ is Amazon’s next-generation AI assistant powered by generative AI technology. Unlike the traditional version of Alexa, the upgraded assistant is designed to understand context better, hold more natural conversations, and complete more advanced tasks. Some of the enhancements included in Alexa+ are:

  • More conversational and human-like interactions
  • Better understanding of user intent and context
  • Improved ability to handle multi-step requests
  • Personalized responses across supported devices

Amazon unveiled Alexa+ in 2025 to modernize its voice assistant with generative AI capabilities and more natural interactions. The rollout initially progressed at a measured pace, with wider availability reaching U.S. users earlier this year. Since then, the company has expanded the service to markets including the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy, Brazil, and Mexico. The latest Alexa+ update suggests India could be among the next major markets to receive the service.

India represents one of Amazon’s largest opportunities for voice-powered technology. With hundreds of millions of internet users and one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies, the country has become a critical market for AI-powered services. Amazon’s latest testing effort aligns with several broader technology trends:

  • Rising demand for AI experiences in local languages
  • Increased use of voice-based digital services
  • Growing adoption of smart home ecosystems
  • Expanding internet access across diverse user groups

Amazon introduced Alexa in India with English support in 2017 and expanded the service to Hindi users two years later. The new Alexa+ beta program suggests the company is building on that foundation by bringing more advanced AI capabilities to a wider audience through localized experiences.

Many industry analysts view language localization as a key driver of adoption for intelligent digital assistants. By expanding access beyond English-speaking users, Amazon could unlock a much larger segment of the Indian market.

At present, Alexa+ is not available in India. While the company has confirmed testing activities, it has yet to reveal when the service will become widely available in the country. In other markets, Alexa+ is included with Prime memberships, while non-members can access the service through a monthly subscription.

The latest Amazon Alexa update suggests that Amazon is preparing for a broader AI expansion in India. If testing proceeds successfully, Indian users could soon gain access to one of the company’s most advanced AI-powered assistant experiences.

Author’s Note:

Amazon’s Alexa+ beta highlights the growing importance of regional-language AI. As companies expand beyond English-speaking audiences, localized experiences could play a major role in driving AI adoption across India.
